SME’s are migrating many of their business functions online to save time and money
London, U.K. (October 21, 2011) – Over a third (38%) of SME’s expect their accountants to process all their documents in a digital format within the next two years, a new CCH survey reveals.
The client-driven ‘expectation’ deadline also shows that almost three quarters (73%) said that wanted to send at least half of their information to their accountant in a digital format.
Other key findings unearthed in the survey revealed that SME’s are migrating many of their business functions online to save time and money, with sales, purchasing, marketing and recruitment all now firmly established as online activities.
And the trend continues with ‘professional’ activities such as insurance, banking and accounting, with entrepeneurs now looking to conduct these in an online arena.
Banking was the single most popular online business and accounting function, with 60% of respondents performing at least some banking online, fuelling the expectation of online services SME’s are transferring to their accountant.
Simon Crompton, head of CCH Software, said: “As the appetite for – and use of – online systems grows, particularly among a younger generation of entrepreneurs, SME’s are emerging as the driving force in the adoption of new technology. Accountants need to ask themselves – and their clients – where their own clients stand on this issue.
“Although some may be happy to carry on accessing accounting services in more traditional ways, it’s unlikely that the majority will be prepared to do this indefinitely. Our survey suggests that we’ve already reached a tipping point, with almost three quarters of SME’s expecting to supply their accountants with a minimum of half of all documentation electronically within just two years.”
Accountants are, however, beginning to respond to the demand, with 44% of SME’s saying their accountant provides at least one online service, whether it is accepting scanned documents by email to enabling them to enter data directly into online bookkeeping or accounting systems. And among SME’s who don’t already enjoy these facilities, expectations are running high with nearly half (44%) of respondents expecting their accountant to offer these services within 24 months.
“The good news for professional accountants,” continues Simon, “is that ‘going online’ isn’t a single event.” “It’s more a series of steps towards a goal and there’s still time to consider the options, but if you haven’t already started, you definitely need to. Whether that’s introducing software to manage incoming and outgoing emails, creating a secure client portal for online collaboration or setting up an online accounting system, the overarching impetus must be to establish credibility with your clients to show them that you understand their concerns and that you’re moving in the same direction as they are.”
Encouragingly almost a third (31%) highlighted ‘integration with my accountant’s system’ as a key benefit to using an online bookkeeping or accounting system, which not only helps accountants to cement a long term partnership with their clients, it also empowers them to deliver precisely the kind of efficiencies that their SME clients are looking for.
